The advent of social media has brought tons of positives for the netizens; the thing which made it selling out as a hotcake was the freedom of expression allowed on such platforms. The other thing making it even more prominent on the board was people across the globe getting onto with this trend, which better boost up the term ‘global village’ making rounds over the years.
The battle of getting more of the users has been overtaking this industry with the social media giant platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp really taking things to another level from last several years.
But now it seems things have changed by far as Twitter has proliferated the crackdown against the fake and suspicious accounts from past several months. The Twitter authority has been suspension such accounts, bots and trolls which lead to disinformation. In a bid to make sure this keeps on going Twitter has suspended over 70 million accounts in May and June this year. Things are going with an even better pace in the month of July and Twitter seems to make no relaxation to this policy at all. Many of the experts are of the view that this policy may put Twitter’s growth risk but this social media platform looks no more tolerant to the fake and suspicious accounts spreading disinformation.
This move got to another level in wake of the report of Russian’s social media involvement in American presidential elections 2016 with spreading disinformation around.
Talking about it, Twitter’s Vice President for Trust and Safety Del Harvey said in an interview told, “One of the biggest shifts is in how we think about balancing free expression versus the potential for free expression to chill someone else’s speech,” Harvey said. “Free expression doesn’t really mean much if people don’t feel safe.”
