The Women’s competition was first introduced in the Hockey Champions Trophy in 1987. Amstelveen, Netherlands hosted the first edition of the tournament where they also became the champion as the host nation. Australia took the runners-up place while South Korea and Canada took the third and fourth place respectively. Since the very beginning, Australia dominated the Women’s Hockey Champions Trophy scenario till 1999. After becoming the runners-up for the first two seasons, Australia won the competition five times consecutively from 1991 to 1999. They again won the cup in 2003. Argentina started to show their prominence in the Women’s Hockey Champions Trophy since 2001 when they achieved the cup for the first time defeating the Netherlands. They then won the cup three times consecutively from 2008 to 2010. Argentina is also the reigning champions as they achieved the trophy in the last three consecutive edition of the cup. The Netherlands, after their first win in the inaugural edition, has achieved the trophy four more times. Their last victory came in 2011 when they won the cup as the host nation.
