Ashgabat, the capital city of Turkmenistan, is now witnessing the biggest event of weightlifting, the IWF World Championship 2018. The International Weightlifting Federation and the Turkmenistan Weightlifting Federation are jointly organizing the event this year at the Martial Center of the Ashgabat Olympic Sports Complex from 1st to 10th November 2018. Contestants from more than 100 countries around the globe are now waiting to display their weightlifting talents in front of thousands of spectators and millions of online viewers.
Reigning champions and record holders are now feeling the pressure to surpass their previous performances. Besides, the new entries are also ready to push their limits to challenge the Titans. In the men’s competition, 16 constantans are participating in the 55 kg category, 36 constantans in the 61 kg category, 33 constantans in the 67 kg category, 45 constantans in the 73 kg category, 59 constantans in the 81 kg category, 33 constantans in the 89 kg category, 46 constantans in the 96 kg category, 23 constantans in the 102 kg category, 38 constantans in the 109 kg category, and 36 constantans are participating in the +109 kg category.
In the women’s competition, 5 constantans are participating in the 45 kg category, 42 constantans in the 49 kg category, 49 constantans in the 55 kg category, 39 constantans in the 59 kg category, 65 constantans in the 64 kg category, 29 constantans in the 71 kg category, 35 constantans in the 76 kg category, 5 constantans in the 81 kg category, 23 constantans in the 87 kg category, and 29 constantans are participating in the +87 kg category.

In the 2018 edition of the IWF World Championship, North Korean weightlifter Om Yun Chol is the favorite in the 55 kg category, Colombian weightlifter Francisco Antonio Mosquera Valencia in the 61 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Chen Lijun in the 67 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Shi Zhiyong in the 73 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Li Dayin in the 81 kg category, Armenian weightlifter Hakob Mkrtchyan in the 89 kg category, Iranian weightlifter Sohrab Moradi in the 96 kg category, Iranian weightlifter Ali Hashemi in the 102 kg category, Armenian weightlifter Simon Martirosyan in the 109 kg category, and Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze is the favorite in the +109 kg category.
In the women’s competition, Thai weightlifter Chiraphan Nanthawong is the favorite in the 45 kg category, Indonesian weightlifter Sri Wahyuni Agustiani in the 49 kg category, Thai weightlifter Sukanya Srisurat in the 55 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Chen Guiming in the 59 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Deng Wei in the 64 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Zhang Wangli in the 71 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Wang Zhouyu in the 76 kg category, Belgian weightlifter Vanbellinghen Anne Marie-J A M in the 81 kg category, Chinese weightlifter Ao Hui in the 87 kg category, and Russian weightlifter Kashirina Tatiana is the clear favorite in the +87 kg category.

The jury board of ‘Group 1’ consists of Karl Rimbock (GER), Costel Dimofte (ROU), D Alvarado (Mex), Tina Beiter (Den), Don McNeill (CAN), and Jan Stefanik (SVK). The weightlifting world will witness a new set of world records this year as International Weightlifting Federation has introduced 20 new categories replacing the old 15 categories in the competitions. They have also released the world standards for the new records.
