Ashgabat, the capital city of Turkmenistan, is hosting the biggest event of weightlifting this year, the IWF World Championship 2018. Replacing the previous 15 categories in total, the International Weightlifting Federation has already introduced 20 new categories in the men’s and women’s weightlifting event. And, more than 1500 weightlifters and their coaches will participate in this auspicious event that takes place in the Martial Arts Arena of the Ashgabat Olympic Complex.
Besides the athletes, hundreds of officials and media representatives from more than 100 countries have already joined this championship event. Besides the main competition, the fans of the IWF World Championship 2018 will also witness a marvelous and colorful opening and closing ceremony that will take place on 1st and 10th November respectably. The organizing committee of this year’s World Weightlifting Championship is now ensuring their highest efforts to make this event much remarkable than before.

Lasha Talakhadze World Record
Legendary Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze has lifted a whopping 220 kg in the ‘Snatch’ event at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, United States. He also marked the new world record of lifting 477 kg in total in the +105 kg category on 5th December 2017. This 25-year-old lifter also achieved the Olympic gold in 2016.
Sohrab Moradi World Record
Iranian weightlifter Sohrab Moradi has lifted 189 kg in the ‘Snatch’ event and 233 kg in the ‘Clean & Jerk’ event thus lifting 417 kg in total at the 2017 IWF World Championships on 3 December 2017. He currently holds all three records in the 94 kg category and is expecting to surpass his own records in the 2018 edition of the championship.
Liao Hui World Record
Chinese weightlifter Liao Hui has lifted 198 kg in the ‘Clean & Jerk’ event at the 2013 World Championship in Poland, and also lifted 166 kg in the ‘Snatch’ event at the 2014 World Championship in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Besides these two records, he also currently holds the world record in total weight with his 359 kg.
Om Yun-Chol World Record
North Korean weightlifter Om Yun-Chol has lifted 171 kg in the ‘Clean & Jerk’ event at the 2015 World Weightlifting Championship and created a new world record on 21st November 2015 in Houston, United States. Besides his performances at the IWF Championships, he also won the gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Chen Lijun World Record
Chinese weightlifter Chen Lijun has lifted 183 kg in the ‘Clean & Jerk’ event thus setting 333 kg in total at the 2015 World Weightlifting Championship in Houston, United States. He made both the world records in the event and in total on 22 November 2015. Besides his IWF accomplishments, he also won both the National Games of China and Wrocław World Championship in 2013.
Tatiana Kashirina World Record
Russian female weightlifter Tatiana Kashirina has marked three new world records at the 2014 IWF World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. She lifted 155 kg in the ‘Snatch’ event and 193 kg in the ‘Clean & Jerk’ event thus accumulating 348 kg in total on 16th November 2014. Besides her World Championship performances, Kashirina is also a 7-times European champion.
Hripsime Khurshudyan World Record
Legendary Armenian weightlifter Hripsime Khurshudyan currently holds two world records which she created at the 2010 World Weightlifting Championships in Antalya, Turkey. She lifted 160 kg in the ‘Clean & Jerk’ event while marking 283 kg in total on 25th September 2010. Khurshudyan also won the bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games. But, she was later stripped of her Olympic medal after tested positive in the doping test.
Oksana Slivenko World Record
Russian weightlifter Oksana Slivenko has lifted 123 kg in the ‘Snatch’ event at the 2006 IWF World Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican, on 4th October 2006. Besides, she also created a new world record while lifting 276 kg in total at the 2007 World Weightlifting Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on 24 September 2007.
Yang Lian World Record
Chinese female weightlifter Yang Lian has lifted 98 kg in the ‘Snatch’ event at the 2006 IWF World Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican. Besides, she has also marked the new world record in total with her 217 kg on 1st October 2006. Yang Lian has also achieved the gold medals in 2005 and 2009 East Asian Games besides becoming the champion of the 2005 National Games of China.
Boyanka Kostova World Record
The legendary female weightlifter from Azerbaijan, Boyanka Kostova, has marked two new world records at the 2015 IWF World Championships in Houston, United States. She lifted 112 kg in the ‘Snatch’ event thus marking 252 kg in total on 23 November 2015. Besides her IWF performances, Boyanka Kostova is also a 3-times European champion.
