Sharice Davids and Deb Haaland who are Democrats will take oath to become the first Native American women ever to be elected to office.
Deb Haaland will be replacing fellow Democratic Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham in New Mexico; Grisham’s electoral seat was vacated after she decided to contest for governor, while Sharice Davids will Kansas GOP Representative Kevin Yoder’s electoral seat.
Sharice Davids represents the Ho-Chunk Nation and Deb Haaland represents Pueblo of Laguna.
Their projected victories mark the start of a new chapter in the US political system as they will be the first ever Elected Female members of Native American Descent.
Another fact that makes Sharice Davids win both unique and liberating is that she identifies as a lesbian; which also makes her the first openly LGBT member of Congress from Kansas.
Deb Haaland came out successful in her district’s primary election in June, setting her up to take the general election against Republican congressional nominee Janice Arnold-Jones.

The wins are coming up at a time when Native Americans brought legal action over alleged voter suppression , with the Spirit Lake Tribe filing a complaint in October against North Dakota over a voter identification law the tribe said disabled voters living on reservations.
Campaign Legal Center in its statement said that federal Judge Daniel Hovland denied the tribes legal request the previously for an order stopping the ID requirement.
