What is UEFA Nations League? Format|Schedule|Groups|Fixtures

We are all set to witness a unique new league about to take place in the planet’s most highly contested Footballing continent, Europe. UEFA has introduced a new league, known as the UEFA Nations League. The inaugural league will be starting from 6th Sepetmber 2018. With more than 55 teams participating in the competition, it will be one of the biggest international football events in the world.

What is UEFA Nations League?

The Nations League is a new initiative of UEFA that aims to eliminate the friendly matches among countries. A vast majority of the friendlies that take place during the peak time of the season and in-between are quite meaningless. The only purpose that the friendlies serve is allow the countries to keep their squads ready for the tournaments and to allow the players to remain in practice. However, with this new league, there will be a sense of purpose in the International matches. The top 4 teams of the league will compete against each other in 2019 and a champion will be crowned. The whole purpose of the UEFA Nations League is to increase the quality of International games and to develop greater competition.

Format of UEFA Nations League

55 teams will compete against each other in this league. The teams will be split into 4 different leagues. The distribution of teams in the 4 leagues will be based on the UEFA ranking of the teams. Each league will be further split up in groups of three or four teams. Four teams will emerge as the winners of their respective groups and then they will compete against each other for the trophy. The league also features a relegation and promotion scenario. Four teams will be relegated and four teams will be promoted at the start of the 2020 season of UEFA Nations League.
