Paul Scholes believes Erling Haaland can reach the same level of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi

October 13, 2020 by Sourav Das

Since his joining at Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund from Red Bull Salzburg in January this year, Norwegian star Erling Haaland already scored 17 goals in just 18 German league matches. And for that, he already became a favorite among some biggest clubs across the globe. But now, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes also openly expressed his trust in Haaland saying he can reach the level of Ronaldo or Messi.

Haaland recently made a huge buzz in the global media after he scored a brilliant international hat-trick against Romania this week. On the other hand, Manchester United tried to get him at Old Trafford before he agreed on a deal with Dortmund. However, the Norwegian striker finally chose Bundesliga over the Premier League.

While talking about Erling Haaland, Paul Scholes told Stadium Astro, “I think Haaland is sensational.” He then added, “I think he’ll be up there with your Ronaldo’s and Messi’s levels possibly from what I’ve seen so far.” He said, “That’s why I just never felt Sancho was the right type of player because we’ve got three of that type of player already”

The former Red Devils also talked about the recent recruits at Old Trafford. He said, “To spend £100m or whatever, I didn’t think it was right. I wasn’t that disappointed.” He then further added, “Look, he’s a brilliant player and he’ll probably improve any team but I just didn’t think there was the need for him this year.”

Right after Haaland scored his hat-trick, he also gave tribute to Odegaard. He said, “I just have to pay tribute to him a little. Finally, he came to his senses and played the ball to me.” The Norwegian star then added, “Yes, I can simply split it in two. It’s nice to play with Odegaard. It will only get better in the years to come. We are still young.”

Odegaard, on the other hand, said, “We know that it’s just [a case of] getting the ball in behind.” He said, “He starts perfectly every time and almost never goes offside. He times it well and always gets there first.” He then further added, “He holds a high international class. But if you wait a little longer, I will compare it with other players.”
