Before Lionel Messi and his arch rival, Cristiano Ronaldo came on the scene of football, the strikers who would score between 20 – 30 goals in a season would be thought of outstanding. However, with the arrival of Messi and Ronaldo things have changed and the bar has been set so high that those who score 20 to 30 goals are considered to be just average.

Lionel Messi has been scoring 40 goals every year since 2009. During the past 10 years Messi has been able to score 50 goals in a year, 7 times. And his best year was 2012 when the legend scored 91 goals in a single year. Here’s how many goals Messi has scored every year since 2009.

Lionel Messi has scored 40+ goals for 10 consecutive seasons:

2009 – 41 goals
2010 – 60
2011 – 59
2012 – 91
2013 – 45
2014 – 58
2015 – 52
2016 – 59
2017 – 54
2018 – 40 (so far)
