Brazilian legend Tostao believes only a hybrid between Messi and Ronaldo could reach the level of Pele

Former Brazilian footballer and World Cup legend, Tostao, believes that no one could top Pele in the all-time greatest list, not even Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. He believes only a hybrid between the Portuguese and Argentine legend could have the chance to outrun Pele in terms of talents and footballing prowess.

Since his heydays, Pele became the undisputed champion in the list of greatest footballers of all time. Only Deigo Maradona came close to him on this list before the rise of two modern maestros, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. And now, these two players are seriously challenging him at the top place of the greatest list.

However, Pele’s 1970 FIFA World Cup teammate Tostao believes there is no similarity between these players. While talking about Pele, he told FIFA’s official website, “I think Pele was better than all of them. For me, there’s no comparison. Pele was far more complete. He had every quality that a forward could have. He didn’t have one defect.”

Tostao said, “Messi’s spectacular, but he doesn’t head the ball as Pele did, he doesn’t shoot as well with both feet, he doesn’t pull off the moves that Pele did.” He then added, “Cristiano Ronaldo is an exceptional player, but he doesn’t have the ability that Pele had and he doesn’t pull off the incredible passes that Pele did.”

Pele on Ronaldo and Messi

The Brazilian legend said, “If you take the qualities of Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi, put them together, then you’d have a player to compare to Pele!” He further added his remark on this debate while saying, “Maradona was spectacular, but he wasn’t on Pele’s level physically, he didn’t score the numbers of goals Pele did.”

Pele, on the other hand, also had his comment on this never-ending battle about the greatest player. While talking about the best player, the Brazilian legend said, “Today the best player in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo. I think he’s the best because he’s more consistent. But you can’t forget about Messi, of course, but he’s not a striker.”
