One of the greatest left-backs of all time, Roberto Carlos, recently opened up about his sudden transfer from Inter Milan to La Liga side Real Madrid in 1996. He revealed that it was the disagreement that lasted for just ’10 minutes’ for the first time. And after that discussion with his starting position, he opted for Real Madrid.
One of the greatest Brazilian defenders, Carlos, moved to San Siro to wear the Inter jersey in 1995 after spending a brief session with his homeland side Palmeiras. Legendary manager Roy Hodgson was then managing the Italian club when Carlos first arrived at Nerazzurri. And within a few months after his arrival, the disagreement started.
Roberto Carlos recalls the real reason behind his transfer from Inter Milan to Real Madrid
While talking about the incident, Carlos said, “I played on the wing [at Inter].” He then also added to his Instagram profile, that “The problem is that in the first seven games, I scored seven goals.” Carlos said, “They went to put me upfront in Italy in 1995 and I suffered a lot because of it.”
The Brazilian left-back further added, “I spoke with [Inter president Massimo] Moratti and I said to him that I couldn’t keep playing upfront because in three months, I had the Copa America and that day I had a meeting with [Real president] Lorenzo Sanz and in ten minutes, I left and I came to Madrid. At that time, things were done very quickly.”
